How to Make the Kindle "Always On" (Prevent Sleep)

By default, a Kindle will go to sleep (showing the screensaver ad or picture) after about 10 minutes of inactivity. To bypass this, you need to use a built-in search bar command.

The ~ds Command (Disable Sleep): This is a diagnostic command built into the Kindle OS.

  1. Go to the Kindle's main Home screen (not the browser).
  2. Tap the Search bar at the top.
  3. Type exactly this: ~ds
  4. Press the Search (or Enter) key.
  5. Nothing obvious will happen. You will just return to the home screen. However, sleep is now disabled.
  6. Open the Experimental Browser and navigate back to your dashboard page. The Kindle will now stay on this page forever until the battery dies or you restart it.

Note: To re-enable normal sleep behavior later, you must completely restart the Kindle (press and hold the power button for 40 seconds).
